After reading the recent FBI report on the state of email related cybercrime in 2022, one statistic popped out at me, when correlating different parts of the report related to Business Email Compromise and Ransomware.
We’ve had a few days of insightful discussions at the world’s largest legal IT security event, ILTA LegalSEC. Since many of you are not able to (or not in the right frame of mind to) travel to beautiful Baltimore to experience this event live, I thought I would dedicate this week’s Tech Essentials to sharing the top three FBI-special-agent speaker insights (from my perspective).
A quick program note for our regular readers: we’re interrupting our scheduled series on the best-in-class, scalable eSignature software that is RSign so that we can address some important current economic events…
You may wish you were one of the zombies from The Last of Us after a BEC attack. Previously on Tech Essentials, we introduced you to the cybercrime phenomenon initiated by Email Eavesdropping and ending in a mis-wire, in part 1 of a 3-part series we’re running.
You may be barricaded inside the best of (fire)walls, but you could still be exposed by your recipients’ nostalgia for their memorable passwords. Joseph Heller, author of Catch 22, famously wrote that “just because you’re paranoid doesn’t mean they aren’t after you.” Many Generation Xers out there may recall that Kurt Cobain also used this […]
We’ll Make Etymology of Acronym-Originated Tech Speak Interesting… and Useful. Yes, it’s still the year of the tiger – a year of supposed unbound prosperity. We’ve extended email security to now let you know how secure your recipient’s inbox is. Novel, insightful, very cool! Recently, we’ve run a series of articles on RMail’s newest set of PRE-Crime services. For a refresher, please check our part 1 and part 2 of the series. In a nutshell, “Precrime” is a concept from […]
RMail’s AI enhancements are more in line with PRE-crime detection vs. e-security risk mitigation. As sophisticated cybercriminal lures become ever more ubiquitous, and the consequence of a hook-and-steal situation more costly and disruptive (think mis-wiring funds and ransomware), we at Tech Essentials are spotting a new trend very much rooted in science fiction.
We Predicted the Death of Ransomware in 2017. Oh, Time Machines. We first wrote about Ransomware attacks in Tech Essentials in 2017 – back when a Bitcoin was valued at $1800 (oh, the good old days). The crux of the article was that many victims were paying their ransom to the cyber perpetrators, but they […]
HBO’s Game of Threats How did a hacker get his hands on the latest script of Game of Thrones (GoT), episode 5, season 7? It was an email hack plain and simple. The good news? “We do not believe that our e-mail system as a whole has been compromised,” said HBO chairman and CEO Richard […]
