A Promise That The Internet Delivered On

“Hope is a dangerous thing” is an oft-quoted phrase from the movies, but maybe hope is just a disappointing thing? A little more than a year ago, pundits were gushing about how we were all about to enter a post-pandemic boom, a “Soaring 20s”. Back then, case counts were down, vaccinations were up, and plenty of government stimulus was flying around. Who could blame anyone for thinking that the best of times was ahead? (We even rode the Soaring 20s wave at the beginning of 2021.)

Well, I don’t need to waste your time telling you how this all turned out. Just try filling up your gas tank or getting back into the US after an international trip. In a similar vein, back in 1999, on the eve of the new millennium, there was a similar (if not frothier) belief that we were headed into a new age where the internet would unite us all, as international barriers would fall along with authoritarian governments, and productivity would increase infinitely. This is perhaps what Prince had in mind when he penned his 1999 song back in the early 80s. The turn of the millennium would be a party like nobody had ever seen.

Well, I also don’t need to waste your time telling you how this all turned out if you lived through the last 22 years. Let’s just say things have been a bit disappointing—except in one respect: the paperless office. Unlike Boy Bands, Beannie Babies and Zima, the going paperless trend has had lasting power, and I’m proud to say that RMail email encryption and Registered Receipt™ records along with RSign electronic signatures have been at the forefront of this digital transformation.

The promise back then was that the internet would facilitate a world where messaging costs would plummet along with wet signatures and paper usage, which would have profound environmental benefits. Go Paperless, Save Trees was the mantra.

It seemed so obvious to us at RPost, and I’ll never forget after presenting Registered Email™ proof of delivery (today the globally court accepted standard) to a room full of lawyers at a top law firm in Los Angeles. I asked them if they had any questions, and all I got was a room full of blank faces – and one question… “Can you send a Registered Email™ message after 5pm?”😊 I happily answered, “Yes!” (I was puzzled with the question at first, but then they explained they were often rushing to the post office to get a timestamped proof of sending – and had to get there before 5pm when the post office closed!)

Now, law firms around the world are embracing RMail and RSign as tools to streamline their operations while dramatically lowering costs. As Brandon Haines, CTO of Dickinson Law, mentioned at our Optimize! virtual conference: “The RMail and RSign feedback has been great. Everyone wants to use these products. The senior-level attorneys are always going to use RPost if they send anything out.”

RPost has been endorsed or identified as a top choice for messaging and document transaction security, privacy compliance, and functionality by more than 20 bar/law associations including regulatory bars such as The Florida Bar. RPost has also been selected top choice for legal e-delivery proof in the Jeffer Mangels Butler Mitchell LLP authored Converting Legal & Contract Notices from Paper to Electronic Delivery – The Corporate Council Guide and for privacy compliance by the London-based Association of Professional Compliance Consultants. And RPost has been helping a number of other industries too in their quest to go paperless.

So there you have it. The paperless office is one promise the internet delivered on and has made business more efficient and the environment a little cleaner in the process. Hope need not be a dangerous (or disappointing) thing. Contact us to discuss how you can get started with RMail and RSign.
